Fenix Headlamps for Running: Quality for Off-Road and City
5.10.2025
Running at dusk or at night certainly has its charm, and from autumn to spring it even becomes a necessity, as we have to do our training before and after work in the dark. This also requires appropriate equipment, including more reflective elements and, especially, reliable lighting that won't let us down.
Fenix headlamps are an excellent choice for runners of all levels, from recreational runners to ultramarathoners. Quality light not only ensures safety but also enhances your running experience in challenging light conditions.
Light as a feather or strong as a lion?
When choosing a headlamp for running, it's important to consider several factors. The main differences lie in weight, battery life, and performance. In the Fenix range, we find both ultralight headlamps, if we prefer less weight, and powerful cannons with longer endurance. Then it is necessary to find the right balance between sufficient battery capacity and a suitable headlamp weight.
Lightweight headlamps for shorter runs
If you are a runner who prefers shorter routes, or if you are looking for a headlamp for occasional night running, the ideal choice is the ultralight Fenix HM and HL series headlamps with a smaller battery. These models have a lower weight, which is important for comfort while running, and provide sufficient light output to illuminate the path. The lightest are powered by an RCR123A Li-ion battery or a built-in battery, but headlamps powered by disposable batteries also have an acceptable weight. These headlamps usually cover the needs of shorter training sessions, but as Radek Brunner shows us, it is possible to run the Spartathlon with them without any problems.
Fenix HM51R Ruby V2.0, Fenix Vitae, and Fenix HM50R V2.0 are the lightest headlamps in the durable pro HM series. The weight is 80 grams including straps and battery. They differ mainly in the color temperature of the light and the range of modes. The HM51R Ruby V2.0 has a neutral white tint, the range of modes covers a wide spectrum from an economical 3 lumens to an impressive 700. Its versatility is enhanced by 4 red light modes - 1 and 5 lumens plus a flashing and SOS mode. It can also be used as a rear light when moving on the road and, of course, for other sports - cycling, hiking, or cross-country skiing. The HM50R V2.0, unlike the Ruby, lacks the weakest one-lumen red light and SOS mode, the white light is cooler (so-called daylight white) and covers a range of modes from 30 to 700 lumens. The Fenix Vitae is a unique headlamp based on the patents of Hynek Medřický, which shines in a way that does not disturb night vision and circadian rhythm and does not reduce melatonin production before sleep. It has an orange-red Vitae light and a flasher. The maximum output is 600 lumens in a very warm white light mode of 1800 K.

Fenix HM51R Ruby V2.0
Weighing 86 grams, it is followed by the Fenix HM23 V2.0, which has the same construction with the option of quick removal from the holder and similar light equipment to the HM50R V2.0. Given that it is powered by a single AA battery, it achieves a maximum output of 300 lumens and is therefore particularly suitable for less demanding and occasional runners, or as a backup headlamp. In addition to the supplied disposable battery, it also works with a 1.5V Li-ion battery or a NiMH rechargeable battery.

Some headlamps can be easily removed from the holder.

You can get a few grams lighter if you choose the Fenix HL12R V2.0 headlamp. With a built-in 950 mAh battery and a solid output of up to 500 lumens, it is an excellent choice for non-demanding users or children. In addition to white light with a daylight white tint, it also has an auxiliary red light with a strength of 1 lumen and an equally strong red flasher. The weight is only 73 grams. Compared to the HM series, the HL headlamps have less water resistance, but they can still handle very heavy rain, so for normal use, IP66 is perfectly sufficient. The body of the HL12R is made of durable plastic and can withstand drops from a height of one meter.

The lightest Fenix headlamp of all is the multifunctional Fenix HL17R. It is a small light that can be easily removed from the straps thanks to a magnet and attached to the supplied clip. Similar to the HM headlamps with a removable design, it can also serve as a rear flasher on a backpack, pocket, or waist pack, but thanks to its attachment method, it also holds on a T-shirt, sweatshirt, or jacket. With a weight of 65 grams, it currently has no competition in this weight category, and yet it is powered by a built-in 1000 mAh battery and the maximum output can be up to 500 lumens. Its IP66 water and dust resistance and drop resistance make it a quality light for universal use. The variety of RGB color modes will particularly appeal to younger users.

The lighter models of Fenix headlamps are highly durable and well-balanced, so they sit comfortably on your head and do not restrict your movement in any way. They are an ideal choice for runners looking for comfort and light for urban runs or short trails. For longer runs, it is necessary to consider whether the battery life is sufficient.

The Fenix HM23 V2.0 quickly became a popular running headlamp.

More powerful Fenix HL series running headlamps
The Fenix HL series of headlamps is specific in that most models (except for the lightest ones mentioned above) use their own flat 1900 mAh battery, which can also be replaced by three AAA micro-pencil batteries. In an emergency, you can use disposable ones, but the headlamps can also handle NiMH or Li-ion batteries with a constant voltage of 1.5 V. In terms of performance, these headlamps are slightly higher than the aforementioned ultralight mainstays, but thanks to the higher battery capacity, the runtimes in individual modes are much longer, and with that, the total weight also increases.

There are two trail models. The first is the Fenix HL32R-T, where you can choose whether to use the more powerful long-range reflector with a maximum output of 800 lumens, or the wide reflector with diffused light and a neutral tint. This option makes the headlamp, in addition to its sports use, a great all-rounder for work and all activities where you need to illuminate at close range with a gentle, even light with pleasant color rendering.
The second running model in this series is the Fenix HL18R-T V2.0, whose first generation was very popular. The second generation features two universally tuned reflectors that create a perfect light beam for sports activities. One shines with a bright white light of up to 800 lumens, and the other, designed for movement in poor visibility such as fog, rain, or snow, has a significantly warmer light tint of 3000 K with a maximum output of 500 lumens. It is also equipped with two red LEDs that allow for illumination and SOS flashing, both with a strength of 5 lumens.
Both headlamps, including the battery, weigh just over 100 grams, and since they are trail models, the strap is tightened with a wheel, the so-called SportFit system, which in the case of the HL18R-T V2.0 also includes an integrated emergency whistle.

HL18R-T V2.0 in two color variants.
A non-demanding runner can once again opt for the simple Fenix HL16 headlamp, which runs on 3 AAA batteries and allows for white light illumination up to 450 lumens and red light of 5 lumens with the option to switch to an SOS signal. The headlamp body is made of durable plastic.

Fenix HL16 in three color designs.
In addition to the option of using commonly available AAA batteries, a nice bonus of the mentioned HL models is also the range of color designs, where you will find variants in beautiful blue and red metallic, pink and green designs, or a white headlamp with a black strap. A minor disadvantage for some may be the lower water resistance according to the IP66 standard, which means that it can withstand very heavy rain and for normal sports use this value is perfectly sufficient.

HL32R-T in red.
Before we look at the most powerful headlamps suitable for runners, we must also mention the new Fenix HM55R model. As the name suggests, it is a model from the durable pro series of headlamps. This versatile piece forms a separate chapter among the models mentioned above, where it fits in with its weight of just over 100 grams, and the powerful headlamps with a larger battery mentioned below. The maximum output of this headlamp is an excellent 1200 lumens on the long-range reflector with daylight white. However, there is also a wide reflector with a neutral light tint, with a high color rendering index of CRI >90 and an output of up to 350 lumens, as well as supplementary red LEDs with an output of 5 lumens in both steady and flashing modes. The headlamp strap is 36 mm, but it is not equipped with a tightening wheel. In combination with the smaller body of the headlamp and its low weight, it guarantees that it sits on the head as if glued. These parameters are mainly influenced by the use of a 18350 type battery with a capacity of 1600 mAh, and the HM55R is so far the only headlamp in the Fenix range that uses this battery. In an emergency, it can be replaced by a smaller RCR123A battery or a disposable CR123A battery. High resistance to pressure water according to IP68, and a durable body made of aircraft aluminum in a beautiful design make it a must-have piece. The cherry on top are the 3 stylish colors, including the popular Nebula design.

Powerful headlamps for longer routes and demanding conditions
For runners who venture on longer routes or run in more demanding terrain, the Fenix HM series headlamps with a larger 18650 type battery are designed. These models have a higher maximum brightness and longer battery life, which you will appreciate especially on ultra-long runs, night races, or if you decide to go cross-country skiing, ski touring, or on night cycling expeditions. High water resistance according to the IP68 standard is also a matter of course.
The Fenix HM75R Topaz is a very versatile model and the top flagship among headlamps specially enhanced by our representation. You can use it in long-range or wide reflector mode with maximum outputs of 1600 and 1000 lumens. Both reflectors can also be used in a combined mode, which is perfect for running. Both reflectors have a very pleasant color rendering, and the wide one also has a high CRI of 94.5, so it hardly distorts colors at all. There are also red modes with an output of up to 120 lumens, which is not common for headlamps and increases its usability. It is powered by a 4000 mAh battery, and it is also possible to purchase a case with another 5000 mAh battery for the back of the head, which makes it predestined for illuminating more demanding sports activities, such as ski mountaineering, cross-country skiing, or MTB.

Sophisticated in every way - Fenix HM75R Topaz
The absolute TOP running special is the Fenix HM65R-T V2.0 headlamp, which, like the HL18R-T V2.0, has two universally tuned reflectors that create a perfect light beam for sports activities. One shines with a bright white light of up to 1600 lumens, and the other, designed for movement in poor visibility such as fog, rain, or snow, has a significantly warmer light tint of 3000 K with a maximum output of 800 lumens. The wide SportFit strap, which ensures perfect stability, also has an integrated whistle for crisis situations, which is often mandatory at races. The body is made of magnesium alloy, which keeps the weight at an acceptable 140 grams. It comes in three stylish color versions.

Fenix HM65R-T V2.0
An alternative to both of the above-mentioned headlamps is the Fenix HM65R, which, like the Topaz, offers a long-range and a wide reflector that you can turn on together and also independently change the power of each, giving you several different light beams for various situations: from a wide one for close-up activities to a long-range 1600 lumens for demanding terrain and exploring its more distant places. In terms of construction, it is close to the HM65R-T V2.0, as the numerical designation suggests, and therefore we compared them in this article.

Fenix HM65R and Fenix HM65R-T V2.0
Another versatile headlamp that you will use not only for running is the Fenix HM61R Amber V2.0. It is the bigger sister of the HM51R Ruby V2.0 and differs mainly in the size of the battery and the maximum output in both white and red light, where it reaches 1600 lumens and 10 lumens. You can also turn the headlamp into a handheld flashlight with one movement, and in addition to sports use, it is used by craftsmen, soldiers, police officers, and other professions. It is great for the home, garden, and workshop for DIY enthusiasts. It is a truly excellent EDC tool.

Fenix HM61R Amber V2.0
The Fenix HM60R headlamp is operated with a single button on the side and allows you to switch between the long-range and wide reflector and red light. For runners, it is equipped with a so-called dual distance beam system, where it refracts part of the light from the long-range reflector and instead of up, the light falls down where we need to see. This is similar to some Fenix bicycle lights. The headlamp also offers a special function called 'FREQUENCY SENSING' in the 130 and 350 lumen modes in the long-range reflector, where in these modes it detects movement and can automatically adjust the output according to the running speed (step frequency).

Fenix HM60R
The lightest headlamp with a 18650 type battery is the Fenix HM62-T, weighing only 125 grams. It is made of a light and durable magnesium alloy. It is controlled by a side button that switches between neutral white light with an output of up to 1200 lumens and red light. The absence of a charging connector, which is located inside on the battery itself, also contributed to the lower weight. A trail SportFit strap with an integrated whistle is also included.

Fenix HM62-T in two colors
A new addition is the Fenix HP12R-T running headlamp, which is distinguished from other models with a 18650 battery by its separate battery case located on the back of the head. The entire headlamp weighs almost 200 grams, but thanks to the perfect weight distribution, it is a great option to have a larger battery without the problem of the greater weight on the forehead being a nuisance. Another advantage is the red flasher / light on the battery pack. It perfectly increases safety when running on roads and you don't need another flasher, or in combination with another flasher you will be even more visible to other road users (especially drivers of cars approaching you from behind). The high output of up to 1300 lumens with a beam distance of up to 200 meters also ensures that you will be able to see in any situation. In addition to the supplementary red light at the front and back, the headlamp is equipped with two reflectors with daylight white and a neutral light tint. You can combine both reflectors and turn them on simultaneously in 1300 and 70 lumen modes (turbo and low mode). The cooler reflector shines up to 1000 lumens on its own, and the warmer light reaches a maximum output of 500 lumens, although it has a slightly narrower light beam and, at the same output, a longer beam distance than the cooler light. This is a rather unusual configuration for Fenix, but for running and other sports activities, this solution is perfectly suitable and adds another choice of what suits whom. The wearing comfort is increased by a comfortable perforated strap with a tightening and loosening wheel, as the "-T" (trail) in the designation suggests. IP66 is a matter of course for the HP series, as is high durability, as with all Fenix products.

As can be seen from the parameters of Fenix headlamps, they are not intended only for running. Thanks to their versatility, you can use them in various activities, such as:
- Cross-country skiing and ski touring – Especially the larger, powerful models provide enough light for safe movement on snow and in challenging terrain.
- Night cycling – Long battery life and high performance are key for illuminating the route on a bike, whether you are riding on the road or off-road.
- Hiking – Headlamps will provide illumination for several-hour night hikes or bivouacking.
- Ultra races – When you go on long ultra runs, you need a headlamp with long endurance so you can run continuously for several hours in the dark.
Regardless of which headlamp you choose, all Fenix models are characterized by:
- Durability – Water and impact resistance are a matter of course for all models, which guarantees that the headlamps can handle adverse and extreme weather.
- Ergonomic design – Fenix headlamps are designed to be comfortable to wear, with adjustable straps and well-distributed weight.
- Various lighting modes – The ability to switch between several lighting modes and several reflectors with different properties allows you to save battery and adapt the light to the conditions in which you are moving and the activity you are performing.
- Rechargeable batteries – Most models have powerful rechargeable batteries that ensure long endurance during running and eliminate the need for constant battery purchases.
So which headlamp is the right one?
Whether you are a recreational runner or preparing for a night ultra marathon, Fenix headlamps offer a solution for all levels. Lightweight models with smaller batteries are great for shorter and medium-length runs, but with spare batteries, you get a lightweight partner with incredible endurance. Powerful headlamps with a larger capacity provide long endurance without the need to change batteries and performance for those who aim beyond their limits. Let Fenix headlamps light up every path – whether you're running through the city, enjoying a night trail, or embarking on an adventure on skis, a bike, or on foot.
