Light sources and optics
For all three models, the quality of light is the priority, not just raw output. The common denominator is the neutral white tint (approx. 4500 K), which in these versions is tailored to the local market. Unlike standard cool LEDs, this tint provides more natural color rendering and significantly higher contrast in the field, which you will appreciate when recognizing roots, wet paths, or reading a map. While the Fenix HM51R Ruby V3.0 headlamp relies on precise TIR optics housing both the white and two red LEDs, the larger Fenix HM53R Garnet and Fenix HM61R Amber V3.0 models use separate optics for each light source. The most advanced is the HM61R V3.0 model, which features two separate reflectors for white light: a main distance reflector for maximum beam distance and a second wide reflector with a high color rendering index (CRI >90), which does not distort colors and is ideal for close-up work.
The advantage of the HM61R Amber V3.0 (center) compared to its smaller siblings is the presence of a separate wide-angle (reading) reflector, which offers 4 additional lighting modes.
Regarding beam distance, each headlamp chooses a different strategy according to its focus. The longest beam distance belongs to the Amber V3.0, whose main reflector with an output of 1800 lumens pierces the dark up to a distance of 195 meters. However, its second, wide reflector is also unique; although it reaches only 32 meters in its strongest mode, it emits a very wide and smooth light cone suitable for close-up work or reading. The Garnet, with its 1200 lumens output, offers a very solid compromise with a beam distance of 158 meters. The Ruby V3.0, despite its super-compact dimensions, boasts a maximum output of 860 lumens in turbo mode with a beam distance of up to 140 meters, which is more than enough for most sports activities and casual hiking. All three models are thus able to safely “pull out” details at night even at distances that were previously the exclusive domain of larger hand-held flashlights.

The main reflector of the Fenix HM61R Amber V3.0 has a higher output and is slightly more focused, providing a longer beam distance (up to 195 meters according to the ANSI standard),
however, both the HM53R Garnet (beam distance 158 meters according to the ANSI standard) and the HM51R Ruby V3.0 (140 meters according to the ANSI standard) are perfectly usable for the vast majority of situations.

Red light is an integral part of Fenix headlamps. The HM61R Amber V3.0 model, with an output of 70 lumens, easily handles longer distances.
The smaller headlamps, HM53R Garnet with 30 lumens and HM51R Ruby V3.0 with 10 lumens, are better suited for shorter distances but are still sufficient (photographed at a distance of 8 meters).
Output regulation and runtime
All Fenix headlamps in this article use electronics with constant output regulation, which is a traditional feature of our customized Fenix headlamps. The individual power modes thus shine consistently as long as the battery capacity allows. After that, the headlamp does not turn off, but automatically steps down a level well in advance.
The exception is, of course, the highest outputs, which may be limited by time or temperature. This limitation is understandable given the small dimensions of the headlamps, where such high output cannot be continuously cooled without movement.

Headbands
The design of the headbands also depends on the size and weight of the individual headlamps. While the lighter Ruby V3.0 and Garnet models rely on a standard 25 mm wide headband, the more robust Amber V3.0 takes ergonomics further. To perfectly distribute the weight of the more powerful body and larger battery, the Amber is equipped with a 35 mm wide headband, supplemented by a top strap over the crown of the head. This "three-point" system ensures that the headlamp sits firmly and comfortably on the head even with the higher weight during trail running or long professional deployment. All three models feature perforated headbands that excellently wick away sweat and, thanks to reflective elements (on selected versions), increase your passive safety on night expeditions.

The main headband on the HM61R Amber V3.0 is about 1 cm wider than on the HM53R Garnet and HM51R Ruby, which also lack the 3rd strap over the top of the head.
Batteries, dimensions, and weight
All three headlamps are equipped with a modern USB-C connector, which allows for quick and convenient charging practically anywhere. Differences, however, can be found in the "fuel" that powers the headlamps. The Amber V3.0 uses a high-capacity 18650 type battery with a capacity of 4000 mAh, making it the clear winner in runtime per charge. The mid-sized Garnet model relies on an 18350 cell with a capacity of 1600 mAh, offering an excellent capacity-to-weight ratio, while the smallest Ruby V3.0 is powered by a compact RCR123A 950 mAh battery. A practical feature of all three headlamps is the ability to use disposable CR123 lithium batteries in an emergency. Additionally, all models feature an indicator LED in the control button, which warns you of the battery status in advance with a colored signal.
The type of battery used has a major impact on the size and weight of the headlamps. The smallest headlamp, the HM51R Ruby V3.0, weighs only 84 grams including the mount and headband, with a length of 6.6 cm. The middle model, the HM53R Garnet, weighs 102 grams and has a length of 7.1 cm, while the largest HM61R Amber V3.0 weighs 167.6 grams and measures 10.5 cm.

The runtime of the individual headlamps is mainly influenced by the size of the respective cells, which brings another factor: a significant portion of the headlamp's weight is made up of the battery itself.
Material and construction
All three headlamps are traditionally made from a high-strength A6061-T6 aerospace aluminum alloy with a hard-anodized finish. This material ensures top-tier cooling and high mechanical durability. Another advantage of these headlamps is their fully dustproof and waterproof construction up to a depth of 2 meters, meeting the IP68 standard. Thanks to this construction, all models can withstand drops from a height of 2 meters. The largest headlamp, the HM61R Amber V3.0, is additionally equipped with a smart proximity sensor that protects the flashlight and surrounding objects from damage caused by intense light (e.g., if accidentally turned on in luggage or a pocket).
A quick-release clip and a magnet are essential features on all three headlamps.
Which gemstone will suit you best?
When making the final decision between these three models, it primarily depends on what priority you give to the power-to-weight ratio. The HM61R Amber V3.0 is the clear choice for those seeking maximum luminous flux and the longest runtime without compromises. At the opposite end of the spectrum is the HM51R Ruby V3.0, which targets users requiring the lowest possible weight while maintaining enough power for most common situations. However, if you can't decide, the ideal solution is the HM53R Garnet, which perfectly balances these features – offering impressive power close to the Amber model, but with dimensions and weight closer to the compact Ruby. Each of them represents the pinnacle in its category, so the choice is merely a matter of your specific needs.
