Champions of the cost-per-lumen ratio.

August 3rd, 2026

Are you paying for light or technology? A great comparison of Fenix flashlights by price per lumen

When choosing a new flashlight, we often look at two main parameters: price and maximum output in lumens. But have you ever thought about calculating how much a single lumen of light actually costs for different models? We pulled out a calculator and put our offer to an interesting test. We went through all the main Fenix flashlight series and found the absolute winners in efficiency, as well as models where the lumen is theoretically the most expensive. The result? We found out that the „most expensive lumen“ definitely does not mean a bad purchase. Often, it's the exact opposite!

Cross-section of Fenix flashlight series
Representatives of different Fenix series. Each series has its specific purpose, which naturally reflects whether you pay for raw light volume or advanced technologies.

Model Series Cheapest lumen (Raw power) Most expensive lumen (Specialists)
LR (Search) Fenix LR40R V2.0 (€0.020 / lm) Fenix LR36R (€0.036 / lm)
TK (Tactical) Fenix TK28R (€0.035 / lm) Fenix TK30R (€0.560 / lm)
PD (Duty) Fenix PD36R ACE (€0.037 / lm) Fenix PD25R (€0.081 / lm)
E (Pocket EDC) Fenix E35R (€0.026 / lm) Fenix E-SPARK (€0.399 / lm)
GL (Weapon) Fenix GL19R (€0.083 / lm) Fenix GL22 (€0.160 / lm)

LR Series: Where light is the cheapest on the market

If you are looking for the absolute most bang for your buck (in terms of light volume), the LR series search flashlights have no competition. The absolute winner of our entire e-shop is the search cannon Fenix LR40R V2.0 with a massive output of 15,000 lumens. Here, one lumen costs you an amazing €0.020. On the other hand, you will pay extra for the LR36R (€0.036/lm) model. Why? Because in addition to classic LEDs, it also contains an advanced LEP laser chip for extreme throw. You are not paying for extra light, but for hi-tech optics.

TK Series: Tactical durability and laser extremes

Tactical flashlights must withstand weapon recoil and rough handling, which is why lumens here are slightly more expensive. The king of price/performance here is the Fenix TK28R (€0.035/lm). On the contrary, the tactical Fenix TK30R (€0.560/lm) model is an absolute extreme. It has „only“ 500 lumens but a high price tag. The reason is simple – it is a purebred laser flashlight (LEP) that can focus this relatively small output into a thin beam with a throw of an incredible 1500 meters. On paper, the lumen is very expensive here, but physics works wonders in practice.

Comparison of LED and LEP technology
The classic wide beam of the C7 LED flashlight at the bottom (cheap lumens) vs. the narrowly concentrated laser beam of the TK30R LEP flashlight at the top (expensive lumens, but extreme throw).

PD and E Series: Everyday carry and the tax for miniaturization

Popular duty and pocket flashlights reveal another interesting fact: the smaller the flashlight you want, the more expensive its lumens are. The excellent and compact Fenix E35R with an output of 3100 lumens comes out to a great €0.026/lm. However, with popular miniatures like the tactical PD25R (€0.081/lm), you pay extra for the fact that engineers managed to cram top-notch electronics and a tactical switch into a finger-sized body.

A very specific case is the Fenix E-SPARK (€0.399/lm) keychain. It has only 100 lumens, so the price per lumen skyrocketed. But you are not buying a reflector to illuminate a forest here – you are buying an emergency flashlight that is also a functional power bank to save a dead mobile phone.

C and GL Series: Workhorses and weapon specials

The industrial C series is ruled by the popular workhorse Fenix C7 (€0.027/lm) with its cheap lumens. It owes this to the absence of complex tactical switches – it is simply a sturdy tool for heavy work. Where are lumens the most expensive, on the other hand? In pistol flashlights (GL series). Ambidextrous controls and electronics with extreme shock resistance must fit into a small space under the barrel. While a lumen costs €0.083 for the GL19R, you will pay €0.160 for the GL22 model. The reason is the built-in red aiming laser.

Detail of a pistol flashlight and a keychain
Models like the E-SPARK (with a power bank function) or the GL22 (with an integrated aiming laser) prove that the price of a flashlight often depends on unique features, not just the overall output.

What to take away from this?

Our test clearly shows one important rule: The quality and price of a flashlight cannot be measured solely by the number of lumens. The worst „price / lumen“ ratio is paradoxically found in the most hi-tech pieces on offer – LEP laser flashlights, models with built-in lasers, or miniature multifunctional keychains. However, if you are purely looking for a massive volume of light for the least amount of money, head straight to the search flashlight section or check out the honest work models.
